Over the past decade of working as a nutrition coach, I have had a chance to experiment with many foods. It has been my mission to adapt and promote foods that heal the body from within, and one simple thing that I have learned over the years is that what we sprinkle or add to our food for flavour is as important as the food itself. Of all the spices I have tasted and experimented with, the ORGANIC HIMALAYAN SPICES tops my list. The Himalayan Yellow Chili powder, Bhnagjeera, etc., are extremely fresh, strong fragrance, and have healing properties as well!
They are not just like regular spices; they have healing properties of the mountains, grown in unnatural, clean environments and packed with hidden benefits that are beneficial for overall bodily functions.
How It All Started
A couple of years back, I began a process of gradually changing over my kitchen practices to those that were cleaner. It was not so much a case of restricting my diet but rather knowing where my food came from. That was the time I got to know herbs and spices that were grown in the Himalayas.
The difference was not only in the scent; the herbs and spices were to some extent--better somehow. The taste was fuller, the smell stayed for a longer time, and I could really distinguish between something that was produced in large quantities and something that was grown in mountain soil.
It totally transformed my cooking and my view of food.
What Makes Himalayan Organic Spices So Special
If you’ve ever been to a farmers’ market or seen how mountain communities grow their produce, you know that the air, soil, and rhythm of life there are slower and purer.
The same applies to Himalayan spices.
● Chemical free spices, grown without being exposed to harmful or chemical fertilizers.
● All essential oils and nutrients are retained.
● The altitude and cold air boost their natural potency and aroma.
In short: less interference, more nature.
The Himalayan Spice Heroes I Can’t Cook Without
1. Himalayan Turmeric – The Magic Healer
The Himalayan Turmeric is different from the regular haldi powder we use everyday in our kitchen. The himalayan turmeric powder has a very sharp aroma, a deeper flavour and a stronger impact on the body.
I put a small amount into my water in the morning or milk at night, it’s good for inflammation and digestion, and brings that golden shine which is always discussed.

2. Yellow Chilli Powder – A Burst of Gentle Warmth
Himalayan yellow chilli, unlike the red ones, which is extremely hot , gives warmth without overpowering the heat.
It imparts a subtle smoky taste to food and contains antioxidants that are very helpful in boosting of metabolism and immunity. It’s the best choice for people like me who enjoy tasting but do not want to be in tears in the process!

3. Bhangjeera (Perilla Seeds) – Small Seeds, Big Benefits
These little greyish seeds are used in the majority of Pahadi kitchens. Besides being a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, they are also associated with good heart and skin health.
I use these bhangjeera seeds almost everyday, I add the slightly roasted ones in my slaads, add them in my dips and chutneys for crunch and added flavour. Since they are not processed and have their natural oils intact in them they add an extra natural flavour to all the food they are added into, and they are good for digestion as well1!
4. Jakhya – The Hidden Gem of the Hills
Jakhya seeds are like little firecrackers of aroma, they literally start bursting when they are put in hot oil for tadka and have a warm earthy flavour to them that makes food taste a lot better.
Used mostly in Uttarakhand and Himalayan households, they’re perfect for tempering lentils and vegetables. Besides their earthy flavor, they’re also great for digestion.
5. Evenings Special- Chamomile Tea & Rhododendron
At the end of the day, I want to feel calm and that is what these teas do for me! In a few simple steps from boiling some water, add some dried chamomile or rhododendron petals into it, to letting them do their magic while I just breathe.

● Chamomile helps me sleep better and soothes a restless mind.
● Rhododendron (Buransh) feels like sipping a piece of the mountains — floral, energizing, and beautifully red.
If you ever need a reason to slow down, these teas are it.
6. Gulkand with Mishri – A Sweet Memory Revived
My grandmother swore by Gulkand, she’d keep a jar by her window, letting rose petals soak in sunlight with rock sugar.
I do the same thing today. A spoon of Gulkand with Mishri after lunch cools the body, eases acidity, and adds a bit of sweetness to long summer days.
It’s Ayurveda’s dessert, and honestly, one of the best-kept secrets for skin health.
How I Use Them in Everyday Life
● Morning ritual: Warm water, turmeric, and honey, it’s my natural detox.
● Midday fix: Yellow chilli in dal or soup for a gentle kick.
● Snack time: Roasted bhangjeera over salad or yogurt.
● Evening calm: Chamomile or rhododendron tea before bed.
● Weekend treat: A spoon of Gulkand to end heavy meals.
These are simple habits, but they have made a great difference in my feelings, digestion, and sleep.
AT THE END
Change one spice at a time.
